IAS 1988 [5(d)]

3) How ECM differs with EDM with respect to the mechanics of material removal and energy resources?

S) Electro Chemical Machining:
Electrochemical Machining (ECM) is a non-traditional material removing process which uses electrochemical process instead of traditional machining methods.
It is used to process hard , brittle materials with high sensitivity. The material removal is accomplished by anodic dissolution with rapidly flowing electrolyte. The tool is the cathode and the work piece is the anode.

Electrical discharge machining (EDM):
removes metal by discharging electric current from a pulsating DC power supply across a thin inter electrode gap. The gap is filled by a dielectric fluid, which becomes locally ionized.
